Monthly Roundup – November

Wearing: Jeans, coats, sweaters, double socks, scarfs, anything to stay warm.

Listening to: Still going Old School. This months line up: late 90’s music, Billy Holiday (I haven’t listened to the full song of Strange Fruit. I get the creeps and shivers whenever it comes on so I usually skip it by mid point.), and Patty Griffin’s Children’s Running Through.

Odd side note: I have like 12 gigs of music on my ipod. I think like 5 gigs of that is classical music that I’m probably never going to listen to, and 5 gigs is music that I might listen to once a year. I would say that there’s like 2 gigs worth that I might actually listen to at any give time. That’s pretty sad.
Reading: Haven’t been reading much. I skim the newspaper and read the comics everyday now. ACT study guides.

Watching: Every sport imaginable on TV. I can’t wait until I can get paid to do this. That 70’s Show, Fresh Prince of Bel-air

Craving: Thai food.

Wondering: What happened to Amelia Earhart?

Wishing: That I get a job soon and that I do exceptionally well on the ACT. Also that Tom Brady gets picked to be on the Madden cover for 09.

Lusting after: Jerseys, sports paraphernalia, macs, books, ipod dock/speakers.

Loving: A lot.

Hating/Disliking: A Lot Like Love. It’s on tv almost every week. I disliked it the first time I watched it with Dulcy, but somehow I always sucker myself into watching it again, and again, and again, and I get annoyed every time, but yet I still watch it. It’s horrible. The Jazz fans for booing Derek Fisher. His kid has cancer! He moved to LA to get the best care. That’s just wrong of them.

Missing: Dulcy, Cons, Kat, Tory.

Boy crushing: Ryan Lochte, Evan Lysacek

Girl crushing: It’s not a girl crush by any means, but I’m kind of proud of Christina Aguilera, and the fact that she’s still semi normal and hasn’t been in the press all that much in the last few years, at least that I’ve noticed. I found this People’s Article rather interesting. As a kid I liked her better than Britney, and I got stoned for it. Well not literally, but she wasn’t dating Justin Timberlake who was the coolest thing ever like Britney. So she lost brownie points in most tweens eyes, except for mine…I knew a good voice when I heard one.

Awaiting: Christmas, Next Saturday so my ACT’s will be over with, interviews and an actual job/s.

Dreading: Bad scores, rejection in every form,

Oddside note: When I get a car I’m going to get State Farm Car Insurance, because Coach K did a commercial for them. He sold me. Of course it wasn’t that hard to. I’ve already decided that I’m never getting Progressive and Geico’s caveman scared me got really old and overused.

Thursday

How about them Cowboys!?!

Actually…it’s more like, Favre is injured!

I caught the 4th quarter at a Bar and Grill place last night. I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why Favre wasn’t playing, until they finally…finally…finally…finally showed a replay of the injury after the game. Maybe they mentioned it during the game but that place was so loud and the majority of the people were Packers fans. But they were too busy crossing their fingers to let me in on the news.

I didn’t care about the outcome, I just liked the atmosphere. Which brings me to the conclusion that…all big NFL games should be watched at a Bar/Grill. It’s the closes thing to being at the game that you can get without actually being there.

There’s HDTV big screens, so it’s all up close action, there’s food, if you are over 21 there’s booze, there’s a ton of people screaming, booing, complaining, hyperventilating, jumping up and down, laughing, squirming, and a full line of other emotions and actions as well.

You can even bring all of your friends along, but whatever you do make sure you bring at least one person with you. (the whole 2 by 2 rule was definitely meant for the Bar scene.)

*Breaking News*

Michael Phelps lost!

I’m…having…trouble…breathing.

He’s lost in the short course 200 IM to Ryan Lochte. (They usually swim the long course which is measured in Meters, while the short course is more flips/turns and is measured in yards).

So like totally, like OMG! How could he?!!!

Bah…Ryan Lochte is the cuter more ghetto one of the two. I think I’ve found a new crush (to add to the list, or is he already on? I can’t remember.).

***

After the game I listened to Blind Gator Band. I believe I mentioned them before here. They did awesome, besides the fact that they butchered the 2 GooGoo Dolls songs that they performed (well the singer did anyways). It was just a little discouraging for me. They played a mix of their original songs and general 90’s hits (Red Hot Chili Peppers, country, rock, punk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, you know all that good stuff)

The band brought me along, and no I wasn’t a groupie, it was more like the band members were my body guards (they kept an eye out for me…some weird people lurk around those parts). It felt good to say “I’m with the band”, though. Some swell people they be.

Some Statistics

The Baltimore Sun has no female Sports Columnists, (there’s 10)
The Baltimore Sun only has 31 “blogs” and 3 of them are written by women. Those three would be about Reality TV, Dining, and Dating. (Talk about stereotypes) There’s 13 “sports blogs”.

Small Irritations

I love JJ Redick. Really I do. But I’m sick of his “Better Basketball” shooting video. “Perhaps the best shooter in basketball history”, my behind! Yeah he was great in college (I love my Dukies), but he sucks in the NBA!

(But I still watch every Magic game that airs on TV just so I can see him play.)

Every time I see that commercial I imagine what every non Duke fan is muttering to themselves. It kinda gives pleasure but at the same time makes me sick to my stomach.

I’m just going to go back and enjoy the Magic vs Sonics game.

Go JJ!

Speculation

I just spent the last hour and half reading The Sports Guys Marathon Chat. I feel retarded. The only thing new that I learned was that Kenyon Martin was the last number one draft pick who stayed in college for the full 4 years.

Does that make me a huge nerd? Or is it just Bill Simmons has nothing to offer anyways?

He also got the National Sport of Canada wrong…it’s hockey and lacrosse!

I made a makeshift lacrosse goal today. I put one of the metal trash cans on top of a small patio table. It worked great, except for the loud clang that it made every time the ball went in. I think I might have disturbed the neighborhood, but I’ve been getting the LAX itch lately and I can’t let it die. Especially since I bought one a women’s stick few days ago. I decided it’s about time that I buckled down and practiced women’s style. (even if it is boring to watch) Should be getting it soon.

STX all the way!

(I think I’m going to come up with a makeshift lining to put in the trash can to lessen the noise. And my next goal is to get a large piece of ply wood so I can make my own lacrosse wall.)

Maybe I am just the nerd.

Odd side note: I do not like Dick Vitale when he commentates North Carolina games. He should not stick with it.

Journeying Back in Time

Mrs. Morgan was my social studies teacher when I was in 6th grade, and is my “one teacher that you always remember” that everybody has. So I went down to my old elementary school to pay her a visit. Turns out she remembered me as the “creative student, who left before the school year finished”. And she had kept one of my economic projects up until last year. It was nice to see that she thinks a quarter as highly of me as I think of her.

Going back to the old place sorta felt like one of those movies where a person goes back in time and is seeing the past from an out of body standpoint.

Like when I went there 6th grade was the be all end all. The school went from K-6 so the 6th graders were like the Kings, everyone wanted to be one. Safety patrol was the shiznit. LL Bean backpacks were a status symbol. School uniforms were classy.

Now 5th graders are the Kings. (Sixth grade moved to the middle school, so now they are the bottom of the totem pole). Safety patrol is still the shiznit, LL Bean backpacks are still a status symbol, and school uniforms are still classy.

But it was definitely cool to go back and see where I’ve been, and now it’s on to where I’m going…where ever that is?

Odd sidenote: I love Dick Vitale when he commentates Duke basketball games. He should stick with it.

The Holidays are Here!

To follow the blogging fashion, here’s what I cherish most about the holidays.

- NFL football games are on Thursday as well as Sundays and Mondays, which means there are more games that I can actually watch. (And by the way the Pats/Eagles game was totally awesome. And I don’t care if the Pats eked out a win, that was FOOTBALL!)

- College Football is ending, so more hardcore football is being played.

- NBA games are starting to get more competitive.

- College Basketball is in full swing.

- I can listen to Gospel music and not feel funny.

- I can enjoy hot chocolate on cold rainy days. (which there seems to be a lot of around here)

- You can find just about anything Sweet Potato and Pumpkin flavored, and that makes me very happy.

- People are happier, which makes me happier.

- I love ice skating. I know I should be continuing in my Baltimore fanhood by rooting for Kimmie Miessener, but she irritates me, so I’m pulling for Emily Hughes and Mao Asada.

- And it means 9 months until the Olympics. 8-8-08. yayaya!

Draft Night (the Untold Secrets)

I feel so hardcore right now. The Live draft is completed!

We had a chat running throughout and a lot of grand things transpired.

For instance Toshi came out of the closet.

He openly drinks Smirnoff and Mike’s Hard Lemonade and will actually stand up for his unmanly addictions. I know most of you who say that if a man wears a pink shirt he is only being comfortable in his manly state will think this is a good thing. But I’m sorry that is not manly, neither is a man who drinks Smirnoff.

It became the joke of the night. I’m still smirking about it.

Dan came around in the 7th round. Stole my 18th pick too, Mike Dunleavy, in the 14th round I believe. I thought he was going to go unnoticed, but I didn’t factor in Dan. Dan would have been the only one, besides me, who would have picked him. I believe Dunleavy is the sleeper pick of the year. I think he might finally make his turn around. He’s finally playing his position of choice (guard), is playing consistent minutes, and is at a not too totally shabby team.  Oh well, I got other players.

There’s also a Maryland basketball fan in the league. We had a small 3 minute clash, but it ended peacefully. We all know Duke has the better team, so there really wasn’t much to say.

Side Note: Notre Dame won today!

Of Fantasy BBall and Baltimore

The Running Blindmen Fantasy Basketball League is having a Live Draft tomorrow night. I have the 4th pick. I went old school and named my team the Baltimore Bullets. Gotta respect the classics.

Writing of Baltimore, Michael Phelps won 3 Golden Goggle Awards last week. He’s currently the Male Athlete of the Year in swimming. (The sad thing is that he’s losing his sex appeal. I’m not sure how to handle this.) Also Katie Hoff won Female Athlete of the Year. Double Respect.

Memphis also happens to be a little hotbed for Baltimorian basketball players with Joey Dorsey on the University of Memphis and Rudy Gay on the Grizzlies. With them around it’s making adapting to the sports scene here a little easier.

Pictures and Chuckles

My cousin Nicole was visiting for Thanksgiving. Love blood runs deep in both of us, so we had a lot to talk about (aka we both know way too much trivial knowledge, conspiracy theories, and the dreaded…sports.) She’s one swell swellster.

Joan left me the coolest comment and I know most of you won’t read it unless I repost it, so I will.

Actually the reason I am commenting is that I am amazed at the effect you have on men. No other girl can have their name spoken of so many times in the middle of a football game. You Rock!!!!!!

I hope it makes you chuckle as much as it made me.

And I leave you with a photo from my roadtrip to Mississippi State with Amber.
