Monthly Roundup – August

Wearing: Jeans, shorts (I’ve discovered soccer shorts are the bomb. They’re longer than running shorts so you don’t have to show too much leg, shorter than b-ball shorts so you don’t show too little, and not tight like jeans. They hit all the major points just right. ), and school logoed t-shirts.

Listening to: On the way to work I listened to a lot of Mike and Mike in the Morning, Jim Rome while driving between the two jobs, and PTI and 107.5 on the way home. Now…my ipod on random. It’s really interesting, I can go from listening to a classical piece, then Creed, Nsync, and then Lil Wayne, Counting Crows, and on and on. It’s fun stuff I tell ya.

Reading: Took a break from reading…then college started and now I’m reading too much.

Watching: Was the Olympics, now college football…BOOOO! (talk about running up the score….)

Craving: Dried fruit (especially pineapple and banana pieces) which I got today, so that’s all taken care of.

Wondering: Who’s going to take the brunt of my QB jokes now that Joey Harrington was cut from the NFL?

Wishing: That I wasn’t in World Civ. but in American History.

Lusting after: A new cell phone that HAS bluetooth. I know everyone has bluetooth now…but NOT me. I got cheated.

Loving: DMB

Missing: Lacrosse season. (We have goals in our “general” field, and every time I pass by them I feel an urge to grab my stick and play…but I didn’t bring my stick with me, and I would feel really dorky and self conscience doing that, so I just suppress the feelings and move along.)

Boy crushing: Because M.P. has become a global and commercialized icon, Hosting SNL on Sept. 13th (of course I’m going to watch!) making an appearance on Entourage, and being EVERYWHERE, I’ve decided that I’m latching on to Ryan Lochte (and Tory if you read this…I was into him first (after MP at the time)). Yeah…oh and….

Awaiting: NFL opening week!!!! It’s exciting for more than the obvious reason of REAL FOOTBALL, but I get to reawaken my football crushes while also finding new ones.

Dreading: Tuesday.

I also want to mention that I bought my first pocket knife today. My first? Yes, my first. I was putting together a Target TV stand, (which is important because IKEA gives you tools…Target doesn’t), and I didn’t have a screw driver. Me being ever resourceful I searched through my dorm for something that I could use in it’s place. Plastic silverware? Didn’t work. Nail File? Nope didn’t work either. A key? Tried them all and my post office box key happened to fit just right, or so I thought. I got through 5 screws and it took me like 45 minutes. Not going to work so well when theres 20 left.

So I got to thinking…I’m one of those handy girls. You know the ones that counts as a man when it’s time to pack and move homes, that always gets assigned to help unload the food from the market, is called upon to fix printers and occasionally computers, and to put together and figure out new electronics. And I’ve never owned a pocket knife. Which is surprising because my father always, well used to, carry one around with him, yet he never even thought of getting me one.

So instead of going out and buying a plain ol Phillips screwdriver, and went out a bought my first handy dandy Victorinox Swiss Army knife.

I feel so proud.

And my TV stand looks dashingly beautiful.

College Football Observations

Tim Tebow is a beast.

He puts Brady Quinn to shame.

A Long Weekend Calls for a Long Post.

People say that one of the many fine points of college is to FINALLY be free of your parents…but you would never have guessed that if you saw our resident student parking lot at 2:30pm this afternoon. There was a great exodus, and all of my suitemates were part of it.

After work I headed back to the dorms, ate dinner, puttered around, got bored, and decided to go home too. I might go back tomorrow or maybe Sunday, I’m not sure. But after arriving home I’ve realized that being at home or being in my dorm is pretty much the same.

In Political news…

I find it highly odd and very sneaky of the Republican party to pick a female for the vice president spot.

She seems nice enough, however my Spanish teacher brought up a good point during class (off of the subject but that’s how college classes roll.) that now the Republican’s are probably going to push “Family Values” (she’s has 5 kids, one husband…perfect family….McCain…perfect family). But what about the single mothers and fathers who didn’t choose to be that way, like say because of death or births out of wed lock? What’s their benefits?

I’ve been pondering that today. And I’ve decided that single father’s have it the worse. Mother’s get welfare, but do fathers? Maybe they do but you don’t hear about that much.

Football…

Chad Ocho Cinco is starting to wear on my nerves. I like ESPN a lot but they need to find a new guinea pig, and he needs to start acting like an adult. He a kinda funny at first but now he’s going too far.

A few weeks ago I went out on a limb and drafted him for my fantasy team hoping that he would be the sleeper pick (his numbers have dropped over the last two years). He better be able to play through this injury and get good stats or he’s going to be added to my fantasy hate list that starts with Shaun Alexander.

Stephen A. Smith…

Wrote an uninteresting article in the most recent issue of the Mag, about the lack of interest by black people in fantasy football leagues. (I’m going to just go ahead and say that I don’t like Stephen A. Smith as a writer. I don’t like the racists slant he that he puts on everything. I hope Bill Simmons comes back and starts writing on a regular basis.)

I’m (ehh…half) black, and a female, and the Commissioner of my League. Yes, I’m a nerd (what he calls fantasy football players), and I’m damn proud of it!

Close Call…

A stupid lady almost crashed into my car today. I was turning left at a four way intersection and I had a green arrow, and I repeat a green arrow. There’s a tractor trailer behind me, he blew his horn because I didn’t turn right away. I was checking both ways before making the turn (in hopes of not having what happened happen). So I proceeded with the turn (with a green arrow still being displayed) because the coast looked clear. However this stupid lady comes speeding through the intersection out of nowhere. If I keep turning she hits into my passenger side, if I stop…well I don’t know? But I stopped. However she decided to move around to the front of my car (my thinking that if there was an accident she wanted it to look like my fault…but uhh not happening with rush hour witnesses) She had the nerve to stare me down and wag her silly little finger at me. I pointed to my arrow, pointed to the truck behind me who had decided to go around us while honking his horn and pointing at her. I had to honk my horn and motion for her to move so I could get going.

Argh…I’m still super worked up about this.

Things I should Mention

I just wasted 30 minutes of valuable time by reading Michael Phelps daily Facebook log. Yeah, he’s actually taken to a daily journal…I wonder how long it will last? In any case it’s kinda cool and he posts pictures as well.

Evolution is flawed in more ways than the obvious. Charles Darwin was racists.

Here’s a short explanation. During the 1800’s when Darwin came up with the Evolutionary Theory Europe and the Americas were practicing slavery. The theory with evolution is that we all came from Apes which are black, right? White people evolved more fully into finer learned individuals, then red, yellow, brown, and so on until we get to the black people, the barbarians who didn’t evolve much. Hence how we got our different races.

See it’s flawed.

Screw Darwinism.

Day 3

I’m kinda tired about writing about my first college days so I’m calling this quits after this post.

Read that and weep.

But if something BIG happens, I throw it up here.

Anyhow, today I had the fortune of testing out of my unbeknownest remedial Math course. At first I was reluctant to pass because I knew it was the lowest math course (and I really dislike math), and I thought that if I take that there’s a pretty good chance of passing with an A. I admit I considered intentional flunking. However, about 12 questions into the quiz someone had already finished (WOW!) and she asked our professor if she HAD to move up, because she happened to be an English major (just like me), and he said yes, if you want your course to count for credits* (DAMN! I gotta pass this thing), which I did. (there’s no need to know the final score, just that I passed.)

Turns out that the course that I qualified for was FULL (all 3 classes). It took sometime, a professor and the assistant Dean of Academics to find an open course and at a time that worked with my schedule (very important: because 5 classes on MWF does not sound like fun). I’m now taking a Humanities course and have postponed my second least favorite subject to next semester (along with my least of Science) or maybe longer. Who knows. I’m just going to focus on this semester.

Now on to other things.

Like….the NFL season starts next week, Peyton Manning is off of the physically unable to perform list, and the biggie that I did not mention….

That Team USA won Gold.

First Day of Class

My first day of classes is complete.

-English Comp…so far so good. Except I have to write papers and the longest paper I’ve ever written was 2 pages. Essays are going to be the death of me. And yes I know you’re thinking…”You want to be a writer?” Yes, I do. Just not a long winded writer that writes with a lot fluff and unnecessary crap.

-Information Systems- Pretty easy, It’s focuses mainly on Microsoft software, like Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. There’s a test I can take to test out on Friday. But I’m not so good with Excel so I think I might just continue with the course.

-Spanish- So far so good. My teacher seems pretty cool. He’s a gringo, and kinda off beat. He didn’t have the teacher’s handbook today so we had a getting to know you class. We also watched this.

-World History to the 1500’s- Umm…a lot of homework!!!! Hopefully since I did 3 years of World History 7,8,9th grade (instead of American history) using CLE, Beka, and SOS,  hopefully I still remember the basics. But I think this is going to be my hardest course.

I’ve discovered that there’s no way I can keep my job at the Psych Center and go to school. There’s too much to do. So I’m thankful that this is my last week.

The Last Day…

Before classes start.

Today was an easy day, not much happened. It was pretty chill…a little too chill. I spent a lot of the afternoon bored.

I’m surprised at how much Duke paraphernalia I’ve been seeing around campus. I realize that we’re a private college so we have something in common. We’re also a Division II school so we can like a Division I with out feeling guilty…but we’re in Memphis, where’s their love? And BTW, Duke was my love first.

I used the gym for the first time today with a few of my suite mates. It was grand. We got to thinking that some people have upper body strength and others of lower body strength. I think I’m an upper body person.

Day 2

1. I need my space. Too much has been happening in the last few days and I need time to comprehend it all.

2. I need to meet some upper class men soon. I know I’m a freshmen, and I don’t like to think to highly of myself, but I think I’m slightly above the par of “freshmen”. I’m not sure how to explain it, but I feel my brain being slightly deadened by each passing hour.

A swell side fact: I’m going to be turning 21 in the latter part of my sophomore year. Let the beer flow and my fridge be full!

Classes need to start.

I’m going to mass tomorrow, my first one in 8 years. Let’s hope I remember how everything goes.

Day 1

I moved in.

My roommate and I have changed our room and living room around 3 times.  I think we are happy with the current layout. At least I hope.

Dorms are TINY!!!!

Our hall is shaped like an L, the door to enter is at the top of the long line, our room is on the end of the short one. Yay for long walks, plus a few flight of stairs.

I forgot my toothbrush.

We have a small shower, one toilet, and two sinks for 6 people to share. We had no toilet paper, so we have all pulled together for the betterment of ourselves by having our parents/relatives run to the store to donate to our community pot. The shower and the toilet are separated from the sink area by curtains …we’re going to need to get some serious are freshener going soon.

We’re going to make a shower schedule….guess who idea that was?

Supposedly we don’t have wireless internet in the dorms…but guess who has wireless internet right now…ME! Of course I got it right after I went and bought a Ethernet cable from the bookstore…but I got an employee discount so it didn’t cost that much. Hopefully it lasts.

I’m extremely nervous about classes. I never really had a teacher. And I never had classmates. And I never had lectures and had to keep notes, and then be tested on the notes that we might not had jotted down.

And I have to make at least a B for my own peace of mind.

We have an awesome gym set up here. Rowing machines, weight machines, treadmills, cycles, its all there.

Move In Day

Tomorrow I move into my dorm.

I’ve been suffering through all sorts of emotions today. It’s been a little scary, but most of all I’m excited.

I’ll try to take pictures to commemorate the day.
